SharePoint Online future enhancements to web parts and pages

Microsoft have recently disclosed some new interesting features around web part and pages at Ignite 2018 to begin(at last!) the configuration and flexibility of built-in web parts.

The first is to allow webpart to webpart connections which allows dynamic data to be displayed in one web part (consumer) when a selection is made on the primary (data provider) web part. Initially this functionality will be limited to the following web parts; List(data provider), List properties(consumer), File Viewer(consumer) and Embed(consumer).

The second feature announcement is to increase the flexibility of the Page Title region allowing for layout, alignment, labels and support accessibility for pages. This will give end users easy access to a simple web part properties page allowing for some confiiguration changes of the page title

A more powerful feature announcement is the creation and re-use of page layouts/designs by publishing them so that they can be accessed by other users who create pages thus standardising the layout of pages and speeding up the whole process of content creation.

A final update even though it is simple is highly desirable in todays modern web pages and this is to allow configuration background shading of page sections. This will give users a clear and indistinctive page view and breakdown as they scroll through content.

These updates will be hopefully be released in the first half of 2019 to Targeted Release customers, so keep an eye out in the admin message center and future blogs.
