Microsoft announced Azure Availability Zones during Microosft Ignite and has since made the service available in some US and Europe regions.
Azure now offers the most comprehensive resilient strategy in the industry to mitigate rack level failures with availibity sets to failover to separate regions. Within every region, an Availability Zone will physically separate the location with each having an independent power, network and cooling.
Availability Zones can provide 99.99% SLA when VMs are running in two or more Availability Zones in the same region with is an industry leading figure.
