Lync 2013 – Persistent Chat Service not starting. “Unexpected DB version. at” Event ID 53104

Morning All,

After installing persistent chat with compliance on Lync 2013 Standard Edition Server I noticed the services would start up and then stop instantly.

I checked the event log and found an error for both Persistent Chat services – unexpected DB version. Event ID 53014


SQL was supported so the error message confused me some what. I tried re running setup from the Lync deployment wizard but still the same.

Then I remembered after initially Front End Server installation I ran the most up to date cumulative update but at that time Persistent Chat and the Lync backup service where not installed. ( I also pool paired)

So I decided to run the Lync 2013 Cumulative Update Installer from the Lync Update Center can be downloaded from

This showed that the two roles I added later were not the latest version and needed updating as shown below.


I installed the updates from the software installer and ran the database updates (instructions for this are on the download site link above), I restarted the persistent chat services and it successfully started and most importantly stayed running.
